Idaho at Sunrise

It was my turn to drive. This is Idaho at sunrise.
Boys in the back - sleeping soundly - leaving this strange world alone with me.
The sun took up the sky. The rest was rolling land and a simple stretch of road - leading us (seemingly) nowhere at all.
There are these small birds who live along the roadside. They dart in front of the car- just missing me.
I hit the breaks until I realize I'll never hit them - even at full speed. They're not suicidal - they're just bored.
I know what that feels like. My boredom gets interpreted for attempted suicide. I picture mom hitting the imaginary breaks on the passenger side and dad cautioning against my impulsive weaving in and out of traffic.
